Have you ever felt that God might be speaking, but you struggle to tell His voice apart from all the other noise in life? Between pressure, worry, conflicting opinions, and old wounds, it is easy to wonder how to hear God’s voice with clarity. In this message, the starting point is John 10:1–5, where Jesus teaches that His sheep hear His voice and follow Him.
Hearing God’s voice is for all believers
Many people assume that hearing God is only for pastors, leaders, or especially “spiritual” Christians. But Jesus presents something much simpler and more hopeful: God speaks to His people, and His people can learn to recognise His voice. The real question is not whether God speaks, but whether we are paying attention.
So what gets in the way? Sometimes it is the noise in our own minds. Sometimes it is a habit of talking more than listening. Sometimes it is fear, confusion, or even spiritual hurt from the past. That is why this subject is not just theoretical; it is deeply personal.
Hearing God’s voice through Scripture
The safest and clearest place to hear God is in Scripture. Hebrews 1:1–3 reminds us that God spoke in many ways in the past, and has now spoken to us through His Son. That means Jesus is not distant or silent; He is the living revelation of God.
The Bible is not an old book with little relevance. It is where we learn God’s character, Christ’s way, and the path of faith. If we want to discern well, we cannot separate listening to God from listening to His Word.
Reflection questions:
- Am I opening the Bible to hear God, or only to tick a box?
- What if I approached Scripture as a living conversation with the Lord?
- Which verses have been speaking to me recently?
God also speaks through circumstances
Sometimes we expect a dramatic answer, but God often guides us through what we are going through. Circumstances are not always easy, but they can be formative. A loss, a closed door, an unexpected conversation, a season of waiting, or even a difficult situation can become part of how God teaches us to trust Him.
That does not mean every hardship comes directly from God, or that every event is a secret sign. It means the Lord can use even confusing situations to correct us, shape us, and draw us closer to Him.
Reflection questions:
- What is this season teaching me?
- Am I asking God to speak even in the middle of the chaos?
- Is there a closed door that may be protecting or guiding me?
Hearing God’s voice and the desires of the heart
Another important part of discernment is paying attention to the deeper desires rising within us. Not every desire comes from God, of course, but some may be an invitation from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes God awakens in us a desire to love better, serve more, reconcile a relationship, change direction, grow in humility, or walk more closely with Him.
The key is to test those desires in the light of Jesus. Do they lead me towards the cross, toward love, toward obedience, and toward a life that looks more like Christ? Or do they simply lead me toward comfort, pride, or self-importance? The way of Jesus always shapes the heart and draws us into something deeper.
This is also why Christian community matters. We are not meant to discern alone as if our own instincts were always reliable. Talking with mature believers, praying together, and listening with humility can protect us from confusing our emotions with God’s voice.
Reflection questions:
- What desire is growing in me right now?
- Does it bring me closer to Jesus, or only to comfort?
- Have I asked wise, godly people for counsel?
The peace of following Jesus
When we learn to hear God’s voice, something changes inside us. We become less heavy, less defensive, and less confused. Not because all the problems disappear, but because we begin to trust the good Shepherd more deeply. Following Jesus does not always make life easier, but it does make it clearer.
And that clarity brings peace. Not shallow peace, but the peace that comes from knowing Christ knows us, calls us by name, and goes before us. As Jesus becomes more familiar to us, it becomes easier to leave behind what is not from Him.
Welcome to IDC Madrid

Hearing God’s voice is not a spiritual trick or a special talent reserved for a few people. It is a life learned patiently through Scripture, prayer, community, and daily trust in Jesus. If you feel confused, tired, or uncertain today, start there again.
Take a few minutes to pray, open the Bible, reflect on your current season, and ask the Lord, “What are You showing me today?” Then take the next step with humility. Keep walking with IDC Madrid, keep seeking Christ, and keep learning how to hear God’s voice.
