What does it truly mean to be a man today? As roles continually shift, turning to the Bible’s teaching on Biblical masculinity and fatherhood can provide direction. Such insights inform modern manhood with purpose and service. For many fathers, leadership feels like a heavy burden. Worse, it may become a tool to control others. But what happens when true strength is not about commanding, but about serving?
The challenge of biblical masculinity and fatherhood in a world of control
All too often, we confuse authority with ego. We cling to our «right» to decide in order to hide our own insecurities. When a man pursues his own desires under the guise of being the «head of the household,» tension follows. It does not produce peace. Does this not happen to us as well? Sometimes, in our eagerness to maintain order, we end up acting as tyrants rather than protectors. We drift away from the model of biblical masculinity and fatherhood that God desires for us.
The Model of Joseph: An Example of Justice and Service
In the Gospel of Matthew, we encounter a man who breaks all worldly patterns: Joseph. The Bible describes him with a profound label: “Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had intended to divorce her quietly” (Matthew 1:19).
To a first-century Jew, being a «righteous man» was not merely about having good intentions; it meant living in meticulous obedience to the Word of God. What is fascinating is how Joseph exercised that righteousness. Faced with the crisis of Mary’s pregnancy, Joseph did not use his position to humiliate her publicly or to protect his own honour. On the contrary, he chose to protect Mary’s reputation, even if it meant that people might think poorly of him. His justice was not for his own benefit, but for the good of others, reflecting the very essence of biblical masculinity and fatherhood.
The Strength of Silence and Obedience to God’s Voice
If you look for Joseph’s words in the Gospels, you will not find them. Joseph is not a character seeking the spotlight; he is a man who knows how to listen. His greatness lies in his ability to listen to God. He remains silent to hear the divine voice. When heard, he obeys without delay.
We see this clearly when the angel reveals God’s plan:
Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus…’” (Matthew 1:20-21).
Questions for reflection:
- Does my leadership at home seek to protect the dignity of my family or my own image?
- Am I using my authority to satisfy my own desires or to fulfil God’s purposes?
- Do I know how to be silent to hear God’s voice in the midst of a crisis, or is my first reaction self-defence?
- Is my obedience to God immediate, or do I try to negotiate with His plans?
