Ever feel that tug inside? That quiet voice saying, «I need to be right,» «I deserve recognition,» or «This should go my way»? It happens to all of us—at home with family, at work with colleagues, even in church when we think no one’s watching.
Christian leadership isn’t about power, position, or getting your way. Jesus flips everything upside down in Matthew 20:20-28 (opens in new tab). He teaches servant leadership as the true path to greatness. This isn’t just for pastors or church leaders. It’s for parents, students, employees, friends—anyone who wants to live with purpose and peace.
Let’s unpack this life-changing passage together.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Picture this: Jesus has just predicted his death. The disciples are processing heavy news. Then the mother of James and John approaches with her sons, asking for the best seats in Jesus’ kingdom—one on his right, one on his left.
Sounds reasonable, right? Every parent wants the best for their kids. But Jesus responds with a question that cuts to the heart: «You don’t know what you are asking… Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?» Matthew 20:22
The cup. In Scripture, this isn’t a celebration drink. It’s suffering, sacrifice, surrender. The disciples wanted glory without the cross. They wanted position without pain. Sound familiar?
Why We All Crave Control (And Why It Never Works)
Christian leadership reveals a deeper truth about human nature. Modern psychology confirms what Jesus knew: our egos crave validation, status, and control. Studies show we protect our image instinctively, even when it costs relationships. That’s why:
- Confessing sin feels impossible (What will people think?)
- Apologizing feels like losing (I need to be right)
- Serving feels like weakness (Real leaders dominate)
Pause for honesty: Where does this show up in your life?
- Demanding the last word in arguments?
- Needing credit for every success?
- Resenting others’ recognition?
- Leading your family by control, not service?
Even Jesus’ closest followers struggled with Christian leadership! If they needed this lesson while walking with the Son of God, how much more do we?
Jesus Redefines Greatness Forever
Then Jesus drops the bombshell: «It shall not be so among you» Matthew 20:25-26 (new tab).
Worldly leadership: Control others. Make them serve you. Climb the ladder.
Servant leadership: Serve others. Take the lowest place. Wash their feet.
Jesus isn’t suggesting. He’s commanding. The one who wants to be first must be last—a servant, a slave. This Christian leadership transforms every area of life:
At Home:
Parent? Your kids don’t need a boss. They need a servant-hearted guide. Spouse? Love serves without keeping score.
Real example: Instead of «Clean your room NOW!» try washing their dishes first, then ask together.
At Work:
Boss? Empower your team to shine. Employee? Make your boss successful, not threatened.
Real example: That coworker struggling with a project? Help them succeed, even if you get no credit.
At Church:
No one saw you set up chairs at 7 AM? Perfect. God did.
Real example: The nursery worker, sound tech, or coffee server—those are the real leaders.
Hard question: When no one’s watching, do I still serve… or perform?
Three Common Objections (And Jesus’ Answers)
«I’m not a leader, so this doesn’t apply to me.»
Wrong. Everyone leads someone—your kids, coworkers, friends, siblings. Christian leadership is influence, and we all have it.
«Serving makes me look weak.»
Jesus washed feet, then conquered death. Strength serves. Weakness demands.
«I don’t have time to serve.»
Jesus served while facing crucifixion. Start with 5 minutes—text encouragement, hold a door, listen well.
Jesus: The Perfect Example We Can Follow
Jesus didn’t just teach servant leadership. He lived it. «The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many» Matthew 20:28 (new tab).
Consider this:
- Creator of the universe humbled himself to our level
- King of kings washed dirty feet
- Sinless Lamb took our punishment
That’s not weakness. That’s power we can’t imagine. Christian leadership flows from his love, not our ego.
Five Heart-Searching Questions
Take these to prayer this week:
- At home: Am I serving my family or demanding they serve me?
- At work: Do I help others succeed, or climb over them?
- In friendships: Do I need to be right, or can I listen first?
- In church: Is my service for God’s glory or people’s applause?
- Right now: What’s one specific way I can serve someone today?

The Freedom of Serving Like Jesus
True greatness isn’t found at the top. It’s found on your knees.
True freedom isn’t controlling everyone. It’s trusting Jesus completely.
True joy isn’t in recognition. It’s in faithful, quiet service.
This is the Christian leadership Jesus modeled—the leadership that changes families, workplaces, churches, and the world.
Will you follow? The first step is simple: serve someone today, expecting nothing in return. Watch what Jesus does through that obedience.
